Delphinium, also known as Larkspur, is a member of the genus Delphinium of the family Ranunculaceae. Generally, there are Big Delphinium (Delphinium) or Little Delphinium (Consolida) on the market. The inflorescences of them are distinct and different from the same family but Genus, can be said to be close relatives.
Big Delphinium is a delphinium, and the Greek word for delphinium means dolphin, because the unflowered delphinium is like a jumping dolphin with a tail, so it is also called Swallow/Larkspur in Chinese. Big Delphinium has erect stems, long inflorescences, many flower heads and dense in the top stem, blooming from bottom to top. The petals we see are actually calyx, the real petals are in the center of the calyx, with upper and lower petals, and the leaves have hand-shaped serrated edges.
Delphinium has common Delphinium species and high-flowering Delphinium species, which are now commonly known as Big Delphinium, but in fact there are differences. Big Delphinium have single/double calyces, and the color is mainly purple/ blue/ pink/ white. Big Delphinium are often 1 meter high with full flowers are like a large flower string, which is very rich and suitable for making large floral works.
In addition, the Little Delphinium (Consolida) has a multi-branched inflorescence with short flower stem, most of which are single layer calyx, the flower color is mainly dark blue/ light blue/ pink/ white. Slightly different from Big Delphinium, the so-called petals we see are actually calyxes, while the real petals are conjoined in the center of the calyx and the leaves are deeply divided into filaments. In terms of floral creation, Little Delphinium is a small and delicate type, soft and airy, which is very different from the feeling of Big Delphinium.
What both Delphiniums have in common is considered a rare natural blue color, making it as a rare floral material. During maintenance, the Big Delphinium can remove the tissue in the flower stem after cutting its feet to increase its water absorption, while the Little Delphinium can be given a normal amount of water.
